Poem 644 – Poetry On The Go

The definition
Of poetry in motion
Waiting as I drive*

*Slight lie, I’m at a service station returning from seeing my parents.

    Another grant sought
    Moving forward step by step
    Believing in God

Another busy day seeking grants for the church redevelopment project: https://wormleyfreechurch.org.uk/redevelopment-project/

    Poem 628 – Inspiration Needed

    Sep 3, 2025Jan 5, 2026 / BenDQ / Leave a comment

    A day writing grants.
    Need poetic ways to say,
    ‘Give us your money!’

Long day staring at forms. Brain dead!

    Poem 618 – Over?

    Aug 24, 2025Jan 5, 2026 / BenDQ / Leave a comment

    The last song is done
    The stage will be dismantled
    Your presence lingers

I wrote another poem today, but I’m not so sure about posting it, so here’s an end of Greenbelt haiku.

    Poem 613 – Camping Conundrum

    Aug 19, 2025Jan 5, 2026 / BenDQ / Leave a comment

    The annual question
Is there enough gas to cook?
    This year? A gamble.

I’m off to Greenbelt on Thursday, my annual festival retreat. Getting some of the kit together today I was faced with the usual question.

Poem 577 – The Ultimate Sacrifice

    Jul 15, 2025Dec 31, 2025 / BenDQ / Leave a comment

    Heroic rebel
Fuses his mind to the ship’s
    Bravely saves the day

A glorious evening of space opera fun, with a half-man/half-machine saving the day.

    Impossible odds.
    Surely not? Maybe? Could they?
    Yes! Yes! Oh! So close…

Breaking away from the starting line, Van der Poel was so close to staying away all the way to victory. Deserves a longer ode than I have time for today.

    Poem 570 – Smile

    Jul 8, 2025Dec 31, 2025 / BenDQ / Leave a comment

    Today we heard that
    A simple smile can transform
    The lives of others

Attended the funeral today of the letter of our children’s preschool. A wonderful woman who was a legend in our house.

    Poem 564 – Unexpected Phonecalls

    Jul 2, 2025Dec 29, 2025 / BenDQ / Leave a comment

    Surprise events throw
    Spanners in poetic works
    A haiku must do

    ‘Nuff said.

    Poem 558 – And I Failed

    Jun 26, 2025Dec 29, 2025 / BenDQ / Leave a comment

    The art of talking
    To the camera whilst walking
    Is a tricky thing

I’m currently preparing a video for a grant application. Managed to trip over both my own feet and tongue…

Inspired by a combination of Paul Cookson’s Daily Poems on Twitter, my father’s own writing, and National Poetry Day, I decided in 2021 to try writing a poem everyday for thirty days. Having reached my target, I've kept on writing...

My poems are inspired by day to day experiences or encounters, or occasionally the news if it grabs me and I feel the need to try and articulate a response. Someone suggested to me that it is my version of journaling - there's a lot to that. I live next to the River Lea and its regional park, and many reflect the joy I have in the wildlife and beauty of the area.

They're written for myself, although I'd be lying if I said it doesn't please me when someone else enjoys them. Feel free to leave comments and feedback!
